Rooted in the Past

Cotton blossom, a major crop of the Blackland prairie

The purpose of the Rooted in the Past project is to connect CCMGA with historic sites in Collin County as consultants on landscaping, plant selection, design and some installations to enhance these sites with appropriate plant material. Our specialists can assist in selecting and designing with Earthkind, water-wise landscapes, whether era-specific or low-maintenance, all based on our science-based approach to intelligent horticulture in our county.

We will emphasize the use of native and/or well-adapted plants, with budget-friendly designs for lower maintenance and higher impact. The landscapes of historic sites help tell the story of the people who pioneered our county and the proper style and selection of plant material can play a large role in conveying a more complete portrayal.

Historic sites in Collin County wishing to learn more about how CCMGA can assist them with landscape issues may download the following brochure:

The program is also available as a Powerpoint presentation given by one of our members through the Speakers? Bureau. Contact us if you would like to schedule a speaker event.

Projects
  • Painting Texas With Wildflowers
A joint effort of the Texas Dept. of Transportation, Texas Dept. of Agriculture and the Texas Master Gardeners. Donated wildflower seed was scattered in Collinsworth Cemetery, a small family plot in Plano on 11/13/08. Narcissus bulbs left over from our fall bulb sale were also planted around the family marker in December 2008. RIPast committee members will consult on future landscape issues involving the cemetery with the homeowners association for Preston Lakes subdivision, where the cemetery is located.
  • Redesign of Parlor Garden, Heritage Farmstead Museum, Plano
This Victorian-era homestead in Plano is in need of revamping the plantings amid historic hardscape inside the picket fence along 15th Street east of Custer Road. Plants available during the decades 1900-1920 will be added to the current selections to be retained as well as suggestions for transplanting and/or removals of inappropriate or poorly-located plant material. The once sunny yard is now frequently shaded by mature trees and requires better selection of groundcovers as well as container plantings and seasonal color suggestions. A small herb garden at the back of the property is also in need of better design and plant selections appropriate to the era.
  • Period Landscaping, Allen Heritage Village, Allen
Allen Heritage Village (located at 450 E. St. Mary Drive, Allen TX) is being developed by the City of Allen as a historic park which includes a collection of buildings that have been moved to the village from their original locations in Allen. Landscaping of the buildings in the village is a joint effort of the City of Allen, Allen Garden Club, Allen Heritage Guild and Collin County Master Gardeners. The first phase of the landscaping will focus on using the specific plans developed by Rooted in the Past to landscape the Allen Christian Church. Future phases will include the entry oval, Bolin House, Lynge House and other buildings under renovation in the village. Please visit the Allen Heritage Guild website for more information on the Allen Heritage Village.
