Horticulture Therapy Program

Collin County Master Gardener's share their love and knowledge of gardening with the public in many ways, one of which is through our Horticulture Therapy (HT) program.

According to the American Horticultural Therapy Association, HT is defined as "a process utilizing plants and horticultural activities to improve social, educational, psychological and physical adjustment of persons thus improving their body, mind, and spirit." Through this program, clients have the opportunity to handle plants, pot them in soil, and learn through interaction with Master Gardeners. Benefits from this activity come from sensory stimulation, socialization, and personal achievement.

HT projects in Collin County have been completed at locations in Plano and McKinney. In Plano, Master Gardeners have served clients at the Pioneer Place, Heritage Manor, and the Highland Springs Garden Club. Projects included presentations on house plant care, design and planting of indoor gardens, repotting techniques, and plant identification. In McKinney, at Kingsley Place, Master Gardeners provided expertise to transform a broken fountain into a seasonal garden. At the Medical Center of McKinney, Wysong Campus, groups of 8 to 15 clients potted seasonal flowers to brighten their rooms and learned how to take care of their plants.

Horticulture Therapy is appropriate for a wide range of ages and physical abilities. If your group is interested in learning more about our program or initiating a project at your location please click on the link below.
